Houston Is Ground Zero For Illegally Modified, Fully Automatic Handguns

Houston authorities warned of the widespread availability of the switches at a recent press conference in which body camera footage was released in the shooting death of Officer William Jeffrey. The suspect, Deon Ledet, was using a modified handgun. He was killed in the shootout.

Over the last year, the ATF has investigated seven such cases in Houston and seized about 104 of the devices, along with many more handguns that already had a switch attached, Milanowski said.

“It’s a problem, it’s a danger for our community. You all can imagine an active shooter that had one of these fully-automatic guns and how much worse some of the bad actor shootings we’ve had in the area could have been,” Milanowski said at the conference.

Having a switch is considered possession of a machine gun under federal law, and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, said U.S. Attorney Jennifer Lowery of the Southern District of Texas.
